Wednesday, the eighth of January

Hello, all you in your '20's!  Happy New Year!  The committee figured that turnout on the 1st might be meager and weary, so we are kicking off the decade on the 2nd Wednesday of the year--this very coming Wednesday.  The imminent Wednesday.  The Wednesday within mental reach, before which no other Wednesdays shall arrive.  We speak of Wednesday, the eighth of January.  Come raise a glass to toast a year of new beginnings, big birthdays, and remembering to write the date correctly.  We've had good luck in January at the usually very busy Valhalla--hope to see you there!

Valhalla, from 7pm
815 9th Avenue, @ 54th

Cheers!

PS--the committee is soliciting feedback regarding scheduling--might an earlier start time be better for folks who are more likely to come straight from work, say 6:30 or even 6?  Should we mix up the days of the week (this could get dangerous)?  Would anyone attend three-martini lunches?  (one of the above is not a serious proposal)

PPS--a reminder that raised glasses need not contain alcohol.  We go well with seltzer.

Wednesday, the sixth of November

OH YEAH!  You thought maybe it wasn't gonna happen, but it IS, people!  It's last-minute, it's spontaneous, it's all the pre-planning the committee could muster, it's 1stWND on THE FIRST WEDNESDAY of November!  It's cold, it's dark, we don't know what time it is except that it's five o'clock somewhere, so come join us for a glass (and perhaps some fondue? we're planning on eating there...) and tallies of how many "Purge" masks you saw last week.

Vintner Wine Market from 7pm
677 9th Ave (46th/47th on the west side, just north of their wine store; the sign of course says "Beer and Cheese")

Cheers!

(December's WND will most likely not be on the 4th...stay tuned)

Wednesday, the eleventh of September

Peoples!  It's been far too long--the committee will explain the hiatus at the upcoming, on-short-notice, WND!  Let us reunite on the eleventh, a date when NYC proved itself to be a great city on the strength of its great citizens (and great beverage establishments).  Tell us about your summer, tell us about your first day of school, tell us about your upcoming adventures.  You might even tell us with a full fondue fork, if you were thusly inclined.  Cheese, y'all.

Vintner Wine Market from 7pm
677 9th Ave (46th/47th on the west side; just north of their wine store, the sign of course says "Beer and Cheese")

Cheers!

(October 2nd is a strongly possible but not definite meeting date; stay tuned...)

Wednesday, the first of May

Mayday!  MAYDAY!  Spring is in the air, and celebration is needed!  Let us convene on the very first day of the springtimey month of May, the first!  We will try a new spot:  Houston Hall on, you guessed it, Houston!  The committee will dress in bright attire for easy spotting, as it's a big open space.  Feel free to bust out your colors, too.  (Anybody got a maypole?)

Houston Hall (222 Houston St @ Varick) from 7pm (committee will aim for 6:45 in order to catch the end of Happy Hour)

Cheers!

(stay tuned regarding a possibly not-1st W date in June...)

Wednesday, the third of April

Happy spring!  Happy lambs triumphing over lions!  Happy bright colors bursting on the landscape!  Woot!  We must toast the extra hour of evening sunlight, the shedding of layers, the torrential April showers releasing every last bit of muck from our streetsides any day we've left our galoshes at home!  Let us gather, hopefully by windows thrown open to the glories of 9th Avenue in the first blushes of the season, at Valhalla, whose website declares that happy hour begins at 3...

Valhalla, from 7pm
815 9th Ave (sw corner @ 54th)

Cheers!

(we are on track for our next meeting being May 1st)

Wednesday, the sixth of March

Friends!  We are in like a lion, poised to spring forward, on the lookout for blossoms and hopefully past the worst of the flu season, and clearly we ought to get together to celebrate. We'll revisit the Vintner Wine Market in Hell's Kitchen, where the fondue will cure any winter blues from the inside out.  Come raise a glass or a long skinny fork!

Vintner Wine Market from 7pm
677 9th Ave (46th/47th on the west side; just north of their wine store, the sign of course says "Beer and Cheese")

Cheers!

(we are on track go gather on April 3rd)

Wednesday, the sixth of February

In spite of being a bit late on the notification, the committee is nonetheless excited for this month's 1st WND, actually on the 1st W of February!  Will wonders never cease?  Come snuggle by the fire with free cheese at The Blind Tiger and bring your harrowing tales of surviving the Polar Vortex of 2019!  We'll raise a glass to the groundhog and hope his forecast is accurate...

The Blind Tiger from 7pm
281 Bleeker Street

Cheers!

(we are presently on track to meet next on March 6th)

Wednesday, the NINTH of January

Hear ye, hear ye!  In this 2019th year of the modern calendar (yes, yes, open to interpretation), let us band together to clink glasses on Wednesdays once again!  The committee deemed the 1stW to be clipping the heels of another majorly clinky occasion, so the 2ndW, the NINTH, is our first endeavor of the new year.  We shall meet at Beer Culture and groom the glitter from our collective sweaters.  Bring your resolutions!

Beer Culture  from 7pm
328 W 45th St (8th/9th Aves)

Cheers!
(we look to be back on track for 1st WNDs--put Feb 6th on the calendar!)

Wednesday, the FOURTEENTH of November

Geez, somebody slow this ride down!  We're all off schedule for 1st Wednesdays, but we are at least on schedule for this week's promised WND on the fourteenth.  The committee anticipates tales of leaf peeping and candy distribution, and will be prepared to review holiday season spreadsheets at Beer Culture in Hell's Kitchen, from 7pm.  A special toast to those who worked to GOTV and to the special attendee who waited the longest to submit a ballot!

Beer Culture from 7pm
328 West 45th (8th/9th)

Cheers!

(a reminder that there will most likely not be a WND in December; let's look to January 9th for our first meeting of 2019)

Wednesday, the TENTH of October

YIKES!  The summer blew by and swept the committee with it.  We're squeezing in an October 2ND WND on the TENTH, and November will also be a 2nd WND, on the 14th (location TBA).  We will most likely not convene in December, ceding WND social time to the holiday crush.

Next week, bring tales of sand and sun, grillin' and chillin', trailblazing and stargazing.  We'll toast the changing leaves and bid farewell to the swelter at the Vintner Wine Market in Hell's Kitchen.  They serve specialty beer and wine, and delicious food for dinner or snacking.

Vintner Wine Market
677 9th Ave (46th/47th; just north of their wine store)

Also, the committee would like to officially state that WND is first and foremost about socializing with friends old and new.  There is no scrutiny of beverage ordering at WND, and seltzer sipping is never frowned upon.  Whole 30 folks, friends of Bill, people taking a break from or generally not interested in alcohol are entirely welcome and encouraged.  "Wednesday Night Drinks" was born and titled in the '90's, when we were still fresh off the college scene and had silly party priorities.

Cheers!

1st WND: SOMETIME IN JULY

Revelers!  A heads up that the committee will be overextended smelling the flowers in June; our next gathering will likely be mid-July.  An alert will be sent as soon as a date is secured!

Cheers!

Wednesday, the second of May

MAYDAY, MAYDAY!!!  Oops, that's a day off.  So, no emergency, but come join us when you've recovered from all that dancing around the maypole and whatnot.  On el segundo de Mayo, our forces will gather at West End Hall, in the hopes that the shockingly springlike weather forecast Mother Nature has submitted to the committee holds true, thus allowing us to take advantage of the courtyard in back.  Bust out your florals and come practice your margarita technique!

West End Hall, from 7pm
2756 Broadway (between 105 & 106)

Cheers!

(we are on track for June 6th)

Wednesday, the eleventh of April

Revelers!  The committee fell asleep on the job, what with the hibernatey weather and general exhaustion, and woke this 1st W to the realization that no scheduling had occurred.  Apologies will be issued in person next Wednesday, the eleventh, when our weather app suggests the weather may still be utterly hunker-inducing.  Fortunately, the remedy, fondue, is available at the friendly 9th Ave Vintner Wine Market, as is a nice selection of beer and wine.

9th Avenue Vintner Wine Market  from 7pm
677 Ninth Avenue (46/47)
(note they also have a wine store a couple doors south)

Cheers!

We are on track for May 2nd...

Wednesday, the seventh of March

WEATHER POSTPONEMENT:
Yeah, so the committee doubts the streets will be impassable, but they may be extremely unpleasant.  We're going to postpone one week, to the 14th, same location.  Raise a glass at home tonight!

'Tis the month of lions and lambs, springtime and springing forward, madness and four-leaf clovers, and they all need celebrating!  Let us do so this 1st Wednesday of March, the seventh, hopefully having wrestled the lion into submission.  If not, we'll subdue him with whiskey, since pours are $2 off at The Dead Poet on the UWS.  Happy hour goes until 8, Whiskey Wednesday pours are $2 off until...4am...you know, our usual hour...

The Dead Poet from 7pm
450 Amsterdam Ave (81st/82nd)

Cheers!

(we are on track for April 4th)

Wednesday, the seventh of February

Another month is upon us!  And, lo and behold, we're actually going to convene on the 1st Wednesday of the month!  2018 is already full of wonders, is it not?  Let us toast to the magic together at Lilly's, in the kitchen of hell, where happy hour goes until 8 and Wednesday wings are fifty cents.  We've got the big front table reserved, which makes us fancy and is indicative of our importance.

Lilly's  from 7pm
675 9th Ave (46th/47th)

Cheers!

(we are currently on schedule for March 7th)

Wednesday, the seventeenth of January!

Egad!  The committee did not quite have its act together to coordinate drinks for the 1st W in the 1st M of 2018, nor to alert the masses--apologies!  Let us reschedule for Wednesday the seventeenth, when we are hopefully better recovered from the December gluttony.   January seems to be the best month for conversation-friendly noise levels at Valhalla, the tappiest place in town, so let us repeat our adventure of January 2017 on the 17 in the '18.  Got that?  Bring your tales of holiday adventure, your grandest resolutions for the new year, and your leftover fruitcake.

Valhalla  815 9th Ave @ 54th Street, from 7pm

Cheers!

(Things seem on track for Feb 7th...)

Wednesday, the first of November

Gasp!  That's the sound of the committee coming up for air!  The past two months were overly action-packed, and beverages were had irregularly and on the fly.  But the first week of November is clear, so we're on!  Get one more wear out of that Halloween costume, whydontcha?  Or, for those of you with extra orange and black attire, we'll be at The Blind Tiger, so you have every excuse to bust it out.  Perhaps we'll even be toasting to crisp autumn air and fall foliage...

The Blind Tiger  7-10ish
281 Bleeker Street
(free cheese from 6pm on Wednesdays!)

Note:  December's gathering is tentative, probably to be a guest-hosted evening...

Wednesday, the second of August

GAH--THE BBC confirmed on Sunday that the bar would be open--we just called to confirm that all this rain hadn't closed them, and they say they are closed for a private party.  We are instead heading to the UWS Beer Culture, 228 W 72nd Street.   Committee has been struggling with internet for past half hour and may be a tad late...

Revelers!  You have not been forgotten!   Pardon the lateness of the official announcement--curveballs and monkey wrenches have been flying in from all angles, positively bombarding the committee.  Fortunately, this drives the committee to seek out with renewed vigor moments of comraderie and relaxation--yea, to stay true to our promise to schedule an evening of them this very Wednesday, August 2nd! We shall gather by the river at the Boat Basin Cafe, where we are al fresco but sheltered if the skies should attempt to dilute our drinks.  On the off chance the weather looks really bad, please check the WND blog for any updates.

The Boat Basin Cafe from 7pm  (we'll be at the main bar, or at tables close to it)

West 79th St and the Hudson River:  Walk as far west on 79th Street as possible, cross Riverside Drive on either side of the street, walk underneath the green highway overpass bridge and down stairs (on either side).

Cheers!

PS--September's gathering will not be on the 5th; stay tuned for an announcement regarding an alternate date.

WND: Wednesday, the TWELFTH of July

Greetings and happy July, social people!  The committee has collected itself after extensive grillin' and chillin' and has a nifty and exciting proposition for our next gathering, on July 12th:  Princeton's NYC alumni chapter is hosting a Manhattanhenge event at the Norwood Club from 6-9 on W 14th street (further info from their invitation is below).

Now, this requires a tad more organization than usual.  Princetonians, please RSVP here for yourselves and guests (don't forget your jackets...).  Others, please RSVP to Sandy/reply to this email, and she will add you to her guest list (registered as 6 for now); note that they may close registration at whatever point they deem it full.

Wednesday, July 12th, 6-9 pm
The Norwood Club   241 W 14th Street

Cheers! And we expect to meet next on August 2nd!

The Princeton Association of New York City (PANYC) & The Classes of 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 & 1982 & The Princeton Arts Alumni Association invite you to gather at New York City’s Norwood Club (Founded in 2007, Norwood is a unique and vibrant private members Club which draws its membership through New York's creative arts community) for cocktails (cash bar) and conversation and to view what former Princeton post-doc Neil deGrasse Tyson named Manhattanhenge!

It’s a spectacular sight when the setting sun aligns exactly with the east-west grid of the city. We’ll step outside at 8 pm to view this phenomenon from one of Manhattan’s best vantage points: 14th Street. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy, we’ll still get together on the 12th for some summer revelry.

Admission is free (cash bar) but you MUST RSVP to gain admission to the Norwood Club!

Wednesday, the FOURTEENTH of June

Remember us?  Oh, it's been a whirlwind of a May and then some!  But the committee is gathering its party pants and scheduling!  We're bumping back a week, to the 2nd W of June: the 14th.  Optimism rules the day, and we are aiming for outdoorsy goodness at Pier i Cafe, way the heck west on 70th (enter the park at 68th, as per their directions).  The committee will wear something bright, hopefully on the pier-side of the venue, to be specified in a rare reminder email, which will also include a Plan B, should the weather dictate such drastic measures.

Pier i Cafe , from 7pm

Cheers!

Note: the July WND will also be on the 2nd W: the 12th.
